1965 Monza Crown
Conversion
Warren's 1965 conversion
was
originally a yellow Monza from Los Angeles CA, an early Crown
conversion, date unknown. The car was purchased it in 2000 as a
basket case, and was shipped to Cleveland. The previous owner said
it should only take about three good weeks to get it running. In
fact, it took four years.
It is trimmed as a white 66 Corsa
with a black interior. The seats are from a
Porsche 914 and are extremely thin and light. The glass is full
tint, with VPA power quarter windows. The firewall is 1/4 " plywood
with two layers of foil bubble insulation from Lobucrod. The bolt in
partition window
is
a steel tube frame with 1/2 " Lexan window, made by Aesthetic Design
Engineering. The gauges are Autometer, including tach, water
temp, oil pressure, and voltmeter.
The engine is a
383 CI Chevy stroker with a Comp Cam hydraulic roller SR264Hr-10
with roller tip rockers. A Holley red electric fuel pump feeds and
Edelbrock 750 Carb atop an RPM Air Gap manifold. The throttle cable
is a ten foot Morse style.
A
MSD ignition with MSD billet distributor provides the fire and a set
of Crown headers with Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers provide the
exhaust path. Most of the wiring
was replaced and run thru a Painless 12 circuit fuse block. A
Ford style remote solenoid was added to eliminate hot start
problems.
The transmission is a big car
Saginaw 4-speed with a Hurst shifter
and linkage by Chris Wills. Clutch is Centerforce with McLeod
hydraulic throw out bearing and a Wilwood 3/4 master cylinder. The
differential is a 3:27 Cidco unit.
The steering and brakes are stock except for a
dual master brake cylinder.
The suspension is stock heavy duty with KYB gas
shocks.
Cooling is thru a Griffin
crossflow aluminum radiator. The Perma Cool single fan is
thermostatically controlled. The coolant flows thru the Crown steel
water pipes, copper pipe and rubber hose. The water pump is an
Edelbrock 8810.
The wheels are steel 14 X 6 Chevy Rallys with
Goodrich TA's 195-70-14.
Warren has future plans to include an ADE Super
Vair kit when it arrives.
